Ghanaian politics has, over the years, seen several families produce members who have served in Parliament and other key public positions.

Some families have had siblings serve in Parliament at the same time, while others have seen different generations enter the political arena.

This GhanaWeb article highlights some political families who have produced more than one Member of Parliament at different points.

1. The Jinapor brothers

History was made in Ghana’s 8th Parliament when biological brothers John Abdulai Jinapor and Samuel Abu Jinapor served in the House at the same time, representing different political parties.

John Jinapor, the MP for Yapei-Kusawgu, was elected on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), while Samuel Abu Jinapor, who represents Damongo, was elected on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

John Jinapor had already served in the 7th Parliament, while Samuel made his parliamentary debut in the 8th Parliament. Both brothers subsequently became members of the 9th Parliament.

Their case is particularly notable because the two siblings have been associated with Ghana’s two major political parties, the NDC and NPP, respectively.

2. The Tetteh sisters

Hanna Tetteh and her younger sister, Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui, are another example of siblings who have entered politics and served as Members of Parliament.

Hanna Tetteh won the Awutu Senya constituency seat in the December 2000 parliamentary election and served one term in Parliament.

She did not contest the seat in the subsequent election but later went on to hold several ministerial positions, including Minister of Trade and Industry and Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Her sister, Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui, followed a similar political path and was elected MP for Awutu Senya West on the ticket of the NDC.

She entered Parliament in 2021 and retained the seat in the 2024 parliamentary election.

3. The Okudzeto family

The Okudzeto family is another example of a Ghanaian political family whose members have been involved in public affairs across different generations.

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, is the nephew of veteran lawyer and former Council of State member Sam Okudzeto.

Ablakwa entered Parliament in 2013 and has since represented North Tongu through successive parliamentary terms.

Sam Okudzeto, meanwhile, has had a long career in law and public service and served as a member of the Council of State.

During the Second Republic, he was one of the founders of the National Alliance of Liberals, led by Komla Agbeli Gbedemah, and was elected as a Member of Parliament.
