Member of Parliament for Buem, Kofi Adams, has called for urgent support for communities in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region after severe flooding displaced more than 3,000 residents.

Several communities along the river had been badly affected, with the Zongo community among the worst-hit areas.

Speaking on Adom TV’s Badwam on September 29, 2026, Adams said more than half of the Zongo community had been submerged, forcing residents to flee their homes as floodwaters spread across affected neighbourhoods.

As a result of the floods Ghana Water Limited have been contacted to supply water to the affected areas.

“We have engaged Ghana Water to supply strategic water to some areas so that people don’t depend on their traditional sources of water, which are the streams,” he said.

According to him, the move forms part of efforts to prevent a possible water-related health crisis in the affected communities, particularly as floodwaters may have contaminated traditional sources of drinking water.

The displaced residents have been moved to temporary locations, including classrooms, while efforts are being made to secure more suitable accommodation.

Adams said the flooding followed two days of heavy rainfall in Togo, where the River Dayi originates from a mountainous area along the Ghana-Togo border.

He explained that similar rains hit the Hohoe area on the third day, causing the river to overflow its banks and inundate several communities.

The flooding has also affected parts of the Volta and Oti Regions, with several roads rendered inaccessible and bridges washed away by the floodwaters.

Adams said the destruction of the bridges had further isolated some communities and made it difficult for residents to move in and out of the affected areas.

He said the scale of the disaster had placed significant pressure on the Hohoe Municipal Assembly and other local authorities.

He therefore appealed to individuals, organisations and other stakeholders to support efforts to provide shelter, water and other essential assistance to residents affected by the flooding.
