Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, has joined commuters on an Aayalolo bus as the new contraflow arrangement begins on major roads in Accra.

Ayariga was seen interacting with passengers as he travelled on an Aayalolo bus on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, for the commencement of the arrangement.

The initiative is aimed at improving the movement of Aayalolo buses during peak hours and reducing travel time for commuters heading towards Accra’s Central Business District.

During the journey, one passenger shared his experience with commercial transport operators, particularly the challenges with fares and travel times.

“From Madina to Oyarifa sometimes you take two cars before [reaching your destination],” the passenger told the minister.

He also complained about what he described as inconsistent fares on the Madina-Dodowa route.

“They always charge extra. From Madina to Dodowa fare is 9 cedis but they sometimes charge 20 Cedis,” he told Ayariga.

The contraflow arrangement is being implemented during peak hours, with the morning period running from 6am to 9am and the evening operation from 4pm to 8pm.

Under the system, designated lanes are reserved for Aayalolo buses to enable them to move more efficiently through congested sections of the city.

The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service has also deployed personnel at strategic locations to support the implementation and ensure compliance.

The government says the arrangement is intended to improve public transport efficiency, reduce journey times and ease congestion on some of Accra’s busiest roads.
