The Chairperson of the People’s National Party (PNP), Janet Asana Nabla, has questioned why women are arrested for allegedly spreading misinformation while government officials who make disputed claims are not subjected to similar treatment.

Speaking during the “Women’s Voices Matter” demonstration organised by the Ghana Women’s Movement in Accra on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, Nabla, who is the convenor of the demonstration alleged that the government, judiciary and security agencies were being used to silence women.

She said the demonstration was triggered by what she described as the persecution of women through arrests, detention, remand and imprisonment over statements deemed to be misleading.

“You’ve heard about arrest, you’ve heard about detention, remand and even jail terms for women in this country for what cause? They said they misinformed the public,” she said.

Nsbla further indicated that several government officials had made statements she considered misleading without facing arrest.

“So, if you are saying that the women are misinforming people and that is why they are arrested, we are saying that there is no equality before the law,” she said, referring to Article 17(1) of the 1992 Constitution.

The Ghana Women’s Movement took to the streets to protest the continued detention of Salomey Awiti Baffoe, a 40-year-old Senior Nursing Officer from Techiman, who has been accused of abetting the publication of false news.

Baffoe’s case is linked to the Ghana Jollof TikTok account, which has been accused of publishing false news.
