The Gambia produced a stunning comeback to defeat Ghana 4-2 in a pulsating 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday, September 29, 2026.

Ghana started brightly and took control of possession in the opening stages, with their pressure eventually rewarded in the 27th minute.

The referee pointed to the spot after Jerome Opoku was adjudged to have been brought down following a corner, with Ernest Nuamah stepping up to calmly convert the penalty and put the Black Stars 1-0 ahead.

Ghana doubled their advantage just six minutes later when Felix Afena-Gyan brilliantly converted a free-kick from just outside the box after being brought down.

The early two-goal cushion sparked celebrations among the home supporters, with Ghana appearing firmly in control and on course for a comfortable victory.

But Gambia responded strongly.

The visitors were awarded a penalty after Gideon Mensah brought down Mohammed Badamosi inside the box, and Badamosi made no mistake from the spot in the 37th minute, sending Benjamin Asare the wrong way.

The comeback was completed five minutes later when Omar Colley capitalised on a defensive mistake to fire home from close range and restore parity.

The Gambia then completed the turnaround in the 68th minute.

Ebrima Colley capitalised on another mistake from Gideon Mensah, nicking the ball away from the Ghana defender before slotting past Asare to put The Gambia 3-2 ahead.

Ghana pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but the increased attacking commitment left spaces at the back.

The Gambia exploited those gaps late on, with Sanyang Sainey going on a strong run before finding Ebrima Colley, who calmly finished to complete his brace and seal a remarkable 4-2 victory.

The defeat leaves Ghana facing further pressure in their AFCON qualifying campaign after also losing their opening game to Côte d’Ivoire.

The Black Stars sit rock bottom in Group C with no points after two games.
