The elder sister of incarcerated former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, Regina Wiafe Antwi, has died.

Former NPP Ashanti Regional Communications Officer, Paul Yandoh, who disclosed the development, said the woman reportedly collapsed after her brother was arrested and imprisoned.

According to Yandoh, Wednesday, September 30, 2026, marks the one-week observance of the late woman, which is expected to take place at Kuntenase in the Ashanti Region.

Speaking in an interview on Nhyira FM, excerpts of which have been shared on social media, Yandoh said the woman became distressed following Wontumi’s incarceration and subsequently collapsed.

“Due to the maltreatment and jailing of Wontumi, his sister collapsed and has eventually died. Tomorrow marks her one-week celebration,” he said.

Yandoh also claimed that Wontumi’s father had been deeply affected by the development and had stopped eating properly.

He said the father was unable to eat when food was served to him because of his distress over his son’s incarceration.

Chairman Wontumi has been in custody at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison since his conviction in July in a case involving Akonta Mining Company Limited.

An Accra High Court sentenced him to 20 years’ imprisonment after finding him guilty of offences related to mining activities on the company’s concession at Samreboi in the Western Region. The sentences on the two counts are to run concurrently.

Wontumi has since appealed the conviction and sentence. His lawyers filed the appeal at the Court of Appeal on July 28, 2026, challenging the High Court’s decision.
