Ghana suffered a shocking collapse at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, surrendering a two-goal lead to lose 4-2 to The Gambia in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying clash.

The Black Stars looked in control after Ernest Nuamah converted a 27th-minute penalty before Felix Afena-Gyan doubled the advantage with a superb free-kick six minutes later.

But defensive lapses allowed The Gambia back into the game, with Mohammed Badamosi reducing the deficit from the spot before Omar Colley levelled five minutes later.

Ebrima Colley then completed the comeback in the second half before adding another late goal to seal a 4-2 victory for the visitors.

Here is how the Ghana players rated:

Benjamin Asare – 4/10

With the talk of him coming in to save the sinking ship, Asare did little to change Ghana’s fortunes as he conceded four goals.

Ghana concede three goals in AFCON qualifier for first time in 51 years

Kojo Oppong Peprah – 4/10

He offered nothing going forward and was abysmal defensively as Ghana struggled to contain The Gambia’s attack.

Jerome Opoku – 4/10

He and his defensive partner could not marshal the backline and were unable to prevent an avoidable equaliser.

Jonas Adjetey – 4/10

Nothing special from the defender, who struggled alongside Opoku as Ghana’s defence fell apart.

Gideon Mensah – 3/10

At fault for the penalty after bringing down his opponent in the box. He also failed to contribute much in attack and was again at fault for the goal that put The Gambia 3-2 ahead.

Kwasi Sibo – 4/10

His usual casual self, failing to sense danger when Ghana needed urgency. Too many back passes and casual passes, with his performance eventually ending at half-time.

Caleb Yirenkyi – 4.5/10

The pairing with Sibo is simply not working. He struggled to impose himself in midfield and, alongside Sibo, failed to give Ghana the control they needed.

Ernest Nuamah – 6.5/10

Electric in the No. 10 role and showed composure from the spot to convert Ghana’s penalty and give the Black Stars the lead.

Brandon Thomas-Asante – 5/10

Nothing much in attack. He failed to link up effectively with his teammates and was not sharp whenever Ghana had opportunities to counter.

Abdul Fatawu Issahaku – 5/10

Did little to boost Ghana’s attack. With his pace and trickery, he should have caused more problems for The Gambia’s full-backs but failed to make a significant impact.

Felix Afena-Gyan – 6/10

Did well to execute the free-kick that gave Ghana a 2-0 lead. Aside from that moment, there was little else of note from him.

Substitutes

Benjamin Tetteh – 5/10

Came on to replace Thomas-Asante but, like his predecessor, failed to do enough to make an impact in attack.

Sulemana Ibrahim – 5/10

Introduced after half-time but did little to provide the defensive protection Ghana needed as The Gambia mounted their comeback.

Augustine Boakye – 4.5/10

Came on with just 16 minutes left, with Ghana chasing the game, but could not influence proceedings enough to help the Black Stars find a way back.
