Chairman Wontumi is pained in Nsawam Prison – Paul Afoko explains

Aspiring New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman Paul Afoko has disclosed that the incarcerated former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is saddened by his inability to attend the one-week celebration of his late sister, Regina Wiafe Antwi.

According to Paul Afoko, he visited Chairman Wontumi at the Nsawam Prison on September 29, 2026, where the former NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman expressed his pain over being unable to come out to participate in his sister’s one-week celebration.

Speaking in an interview on Lawson TV on September 30, 2026, Afoko explained that following the death of Chairman Wontumi’s mother, his late sister, Regina Wiafe Antwi, played a significant role in taking care of him.

He said Wontumi was particularly saddened because he could not be present to mourn and honour his late sister during the one-week observance.

“Yesterday, I interacted with him, and you know his senior sister is dead, and today marks the one-week celebration. So, while he is in Nsawam, he is pained because he could not witness the one-week celebration. But I pray he would be granted access to bid farewell to her at the main funeral,” he said.

Chairman Wontumi has been in custody at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison since his conviction in July in a case involving Akonta Mining Company Limited.

An Accra High Court sentenced him to 20 years’ imprisonment after finding him guilty of offences related to mining activities on the company’s concession at Samreboi in the Western Region. The sentences on the two counts are to run concurrently.

Wontumi has since appealed the conviction and sentence. His lawyers filed the appeal at the Court of Appeal on July 28, 2026, challenging the High Court’s decision.
