Screen shot from Avenor fire outbreak
The early-morning fire at the North Industrial Area in Avenor, Accra, has raised fears that two children, including a baby and a toddler, may have died in the blaze.
The Ghana National Fire Service had earlier said it could not confirm any deaths, but reports from the scene indicate that a baby and a young boy are feared trapped in a residence that was consumed by the fire.
According to information from the scene, the mother of the children had reportedly left them with their father and gone to the washroom. When she returned, the fire had already engulfed the home.
The whereabouts of both parents were also unclear as efforts continued to determine whether they had managed to escape.
Residents said they had not seen the mother, father or the two children since the fire started, raising concerns about their safety.
Firefighters were battling to contain the blaze, while some people in nearby shops were seen moving their belongings to safety.
The situation has also raised concerns because the fire is close to a rubber factory and a rubber warehouse.
Residents and emergency responders fear that the blaze could spread to the nearby shops, warehouse and factory, potentially making the fire more difficult to control.
