University Lecturer Dr Richard Yeboah has said New Patriotic Party (NPP) delegates deliberately chose Kojo Fosu Boadu, popularly known as Kojo “Bamba”, as First National Vice Chairman because they believe he can help secure the party’s future ahead of the 2028 elections.

Dr. Yeboah said the delegates were less concerned about elitism or established political names and more interested in competence, selflessness and the ability to protect the party’s interests.

“They did not vote based on elitism. They were looking at competence and selflessness,” he said on Angel FM.

He said Bamba’s victory over experienced figures, including Dr. Mustapha Abdul-Hameed and Richard Ahiagbah, should therefore not be seen as a mere upset.

According to Dr. Yeboah, election security was one of the major considerations behind the delegates’ choice.

“They know what they want. They are prioritising security over everything,” he said.

He explained that Bamba’s background and grassroots experience could help the NPP strengthen its election security and protect its votes in 2028.

Bamba himself campaigned heavily on that message, urging delegates to “vote for the two intellectuals” for the other positions and choose him to “protect your vote.”

Dr. Yeboah also provided some background on Bamba’s political journey, correcting claims that his first major political association was with Nana B or Nana Akomea.

He said Bamba’s first boss in the NPP was Alhaji Moctar Musah Bamba, who served as a presidential staffer under former President John Agyekum Kufuor.

“That is where he got the name Bamba. He served under Alhaji Bamba and went through the mill before he later served Nana B and Nana Akomea,” he explained.

Dr. Yeboah believes that experience has helped shape Bamba into a political figure who connects with the party’s grassroots, particularly its younger members.

He said the NPP’s youth base spends significant time on social media and suggested that Bamba could use the platforms more aggressively to communicate with them.

“Left to me, I would exploit social media to reach more of the youth because they are always on social media,” he said.

Bamba, a former leader of the pro-NPP Delta Force group and former bodyguard to Henry Nana Boakye, surprised many with his victory at the party’s national executive elections.

He secured 3,116 votes to emerge first among the 13 candidates who contested the vice-chairmanship positions, ahead of several more established figures.
