President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Minister of Finance to allocate GH¢1 billion in the 2027 Budget as the government’s contribution towards a GH¢3 billion revolving National Housing Fund (NHF).

Speaking at the National Conference on Housing Finance in Accra on October 7, 2026, President Mahama said the government’s contribution would be placed directly into the National Housing Fund.

According to President Mahama, the fund will provide financing for housing in a revolving manner and form part of efforts to make decent and affordable accommodation more accessible to Ghanaians.

“I have directed the Minister of Finance to allocate one billion Ghana cedis in next year’s budget as the government’s contribution to the three billion revolving fund for the National Housing Fund.

“This money will be placed in the National Housing Fund, and it will be available for financing housing in a revolving manner,” he said.

The President, during his speech, also announced the new programme, under the National Housing Fund (NHF), known as Easy Rent, which is aimed at reducing the financial burden associated with paying rent advances.

Under the programme, the rent for a worker will be paid in advance, while the beneficiary repays the amount on a monthly basis.

“I’m happy to note the new programme the National Housing Fund is going to introduce that is called Easy Rent.

“And under Easy Rent, they will pay the rent in advance for the worker, and then the worker will pay monthly so that they don’t have to put up those huge rent advances,” President Mahama noted.

President Mahama also drew from his personal experience as a young husband to illustrate the difficulties many Ghanaian families face when searching for accommodation.

He recalled that after leaving his father’s house to begin married life with his wife and First Lady, Lordina Mahama, finding a suitable and affordable home in Accra was a major challenge.

“The multiple years' rent in advance and the one-month extra rent fee that is paid to the agent who found you the house almost ruined our finances even before we had started married life together."

The President further urged the Ministry of Local Government to take responsibility for ensuring that buildings meet safety requirements.

He said accountability must be established whenever a building collapses, particularly where negligence or failure to enforce safety standards is involved.

“These are things that the Ministry of Local Government should take very seriously. If a house collapses, we must see whose duty it was to ensure that house was safe, and that person must be sanctioned for it,” President Mahama said.
