Council of State moves to address grievances fuelling teachers’ strike

The Council of State has invited the leadership of teacher unions to a meeting on Friday, 9 October, as efforts intensify to resolve an ongoing labour dispute, according to sources familiar with the development.

In a letter seen by Asaase News and signed by Acting Executive Secretary Ahmed A. Imoro, the Council said the meeting would provide an opportunity for members to be briefed on the concerns raised by the union in connection with the dispute.

According to the letter, discussions will focus on outstanding promotions, deprived-area allowances and the collective bargaining agreement under consideration between the union and the Ministry of Education.

The invitation comes amid industrial action by teacher unions over unresolved employment-related concerns, which have disrupted teaching and learning in schools.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment has invited the leadership of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and PRETAG to a separate meeting on Friday.

In a letter dated October 8 and signed by Chief Director Hamidu Adakurugu on behalf of the minister, the ministry said the meeting would discuss the status of interventions aimed at resolving the strike and related matters.
