Renowned private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu, has asserted that it is mathematically improbable for the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to overturn its electoral deficit and return to power by the 2028 general elections.

Speaking during a panel discussion on TV3’s Keypoints on Saturday, October 10, 2026, Kpebu analyzed the historical voting margins between John Dramani Mahama and Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, stating that the electoral gap is not feasible for a 2028 return.

"Four years is too soon for the NPP to come back to power. You cannot wipe out 1.6 to 1.7 million votes in four years. That was between JM and Dr Bawumia in 2024," Kpebu stated.

Drawing comparisons to historical trajectories, the legal practitioner pointed out how long it took for the current administration to reverse its own margins, noting that after John Mahama lost the 2016 polls by roughly 900,000 votes, it took two election cycles to steadily rebuild and close the gap before winning in 2024.

“After loosing in 2016 by about 900,000 votes, in 2020, Mahama halved it. And then he won in 2024,” he explained.

Reflecting on the performance of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) two years into its current mandate, Kpebu maintained that there is no major indicator that the citizenry will reject the current government by 2028.

"So the question for the NPP is can you wipe out 1.7 million votes in 4 years? We have done two years of the NDC so far, and if a government is going to go, we would have known by now," he noted.

Addressing current economic headwinds, Kpebu acknowledged that global fuel price volatility continues to exert pressure on the administration, but concluded that systemic political shifts will likely take longer to materialize, projecting that "the real fight will be in 2032.”
