Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George
The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has announced that the government will commence a comprehensive national audit of the Rural Telephony Project inherited from the previous administration.
According to the Minister, the audit is intended to ensure that taxpayers get value for money from the project.
“We are going to commence a national audit within the next few weeks on the entire project to ensure we are paying for the right thing,” Sam George said.
He made this known in an interview with the media ahead of a two-day working visit to inspect rural telephony sites in the Ashanti Region, beginning Monday, October 13, 2026.
As part of the tour, the Minister will visit the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), the Kwadaso Regional Information Centre, the Asawase Community Information Centre, and the Nkwantakese Community Information Centre.
On the second day, he will inspect telephony sites, including Nyameama Number One and Two, Dawia, and Abenua cell sites.
During the press briefing, the Minister said he had called for an inspection after receiving a report from the contractor on the project's state of completion. The inspection, he said, would enable him to obtain first-hand information on the status of work at the various sites.
He reaffirmed the government's commitment to ensuring equal access to telephony services in rural areas.
For his part, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, appealed to the Communications Minister to consider newly developing communities that urgently need telephony services.
He added that his office had compiled data on communities requiring support and would present it to the Minister for consideration.
Dr Amoakohene also commended the Ministry of Communications for its efforts to expand mobile network access to communities.
