Up to 5,000 Ghanaians could secure employment in Dubai following a new agreement between the Government of Ghana and a United Arab Emirates (UAE)-based company.

The agreement, signed by Labour Minister Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum and Masa Depan Building Maintenance L.L.C., is expected to create job opportunities for Ghanaians in construction, building maintenance and facilities management.

Recruitment will begin with an initial group of 500 workers before expanding in phases to accommodate up to 5,000 people.

Under the arrangement, the company will be responsible for paying workers’ salaries and providing accommodation, health insurance and other employment benefits.

It will also cover the cost of air tickets from Ghana to the UAE, visa and work permit fees, medical examinations and other specified recruitment expenses.

This means successful applicants will have some of the major costs associated with travelling abroad for employment covered by their employer.

The Ministry responsible for Labour, Jobs and Employment will oversee the recruitment process to ensure that qualified Ghanaians are selected and protected from exploitation.

The Ministry will also verify employment contracts, assess applicants’ skills and prepare successful candidates for working conditions in the UAE.

Before travelling, selected workers will receive training on workplace safety, UAE labour laws and their rights as employees.

The agreement also introduces measures to protect Ghanaians from unfair treatment while working abroad. These include safety training, protective equipment and a complaints mechanism through which workers can report grievances without paying fees or facing punishment.

A special committee will monitor the recruitment process and working conditions to ensure that both parties fulfil their responsibilities.

The initiative forms part of the government’s efforts to expand employment opportunities for Ghanaians beyond the country’s borders.

However, the agreement does not mean that all 5,000 jobs will be filled immediately. Recruitment will take place in phases, depending on the company’s demand for workers and the procedures agreed upon by both parties.
