Twenty years ago, on October 14, 2006, Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech suffered a horrific head injury that left the football world fearing for his life during a Premier League clash against Reading.

The incident occurred just seconds after kick-off at the Madejski Stadium when Cech rushed out to collect the ball and collided with Reading midfielder Stephen Hunt, whose knee struck the goalkeeper's head.

Cech immediately required medical attention and was taken to hospital, where doctors discovered he had suffered a depressed skull fracture. He underwent emergency surgery, with the severity of the injury raising serious concerns about his future in football.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho was furious after the incident, believing the goalkeeper had been fortunate to survive.

“To be alive, he was lucky,” Mourinho said, expressing his fears over the severity of the injury.

The Portuguese manager also questioned the medical response, warning that English football needed to examine what had happened.

The frightening afternoon became even more alarming when Chelsea's second-choice goalkeeper, Carlo Cudicini, was also knocked unconscious later in the match. With no more recognised goalkeepers available, defender John Terry briefly had to take over in goal.

Chelsea eventually won 1-0, but the result was overshadowed by the injuries.

Cech returned to action on January 20, 2007, wearing a protective headguard that would become his trademark for the remainder of his career.

He went on to enjoy an illustrious career, winning four Premier League titles and the Champions League with Chelsea.

Two decades later, the collision remains one of the most frightening incidents in Premier League history and a turning point in discussions about head protection for goalkeepers.
