Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson with European Investment Bank (EIB) VP Ambroise Fayolle
Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson has held talks with European Investment Bank (EIB) Vice-President Ambroise Fayolle on a €323 million financing package for the Northern Ghana Water and Sanitation Project.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the IMF-World Bank Group Annual Meetings in Bangkok, Thailand on October 16, 2026.
The project is expected to address persistent water shortages in Tamale, Yendi and Damongo while improving sanitation in the three communities.
Dr Forson said he had concluded a “productive meeting” with Fayolle to discuss the financing package for the project.
The package comprises a €68 million grant from the European Commission, a €30 million grant from Invest International, a Dutch government initiative, and a €225 million highly concessional financing facility from the EIB.
The combined package amounts to €323 million in grants and concessional financing for the project.
According to Dr Forson, the project will help tackle longstanding water supply challenges in the three northern cities and improve sanitation services for residents.
The financing arrangement brings together grants and concessional funding to support the development of water and sanitation infrastructure in Northern Ghana.
The project is expected to improve access to reliable water supplies and better sanitation services in the beneficiary communities.
Further details on the project’s implementation timeline and the specific infrastructure to be delivered were not available at the time of filing this report.
