The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has admitted that the appointment of Emelia Affi Agbenyo as a Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) raises concerns over the perception of political neutrality due to her affiliation with the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on October 17, 2026, Ablakwa said although Agbenyo is a woman of integrity, the circumstances surrounding her appointment did not present a favourable public image.

“She is a woman of integrity, but the optics don't look good. I have always maintained that let us have very neutral, independent architects appointed to the EC,” he stated.

He, however, defended Agbenyo’s competence and integrity, maintaining that she is qualified for the position despite concerns about her political affiliation.

The swearing-in of the 43-year-old international development cooperation professional has generated controversy following revelations about her association with the governing NDC.

Agbenyo previously served as a spokesperson for the party on governance during the 2024 general elections, a background that has raised questions about the perceived neutrality of her appointment to the Electoral Commission.

His remarks followed criticism from the Minority and some members of the public over her association with the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), which has prompted questions about her ability to act impartially.
