The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has said the government intends to undertake massive reforms in the football fraternity amid calls for the dissolution of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

According to him, the GFA is a private entity, and it will not be a wise decision for the government to shut it down entirely to change the personnel.

Speaking in an interview with Channel One TV, Kofi Adams confirmed that the government has no intention to dissolve the GFA despite public outrage over the dwindling fortunes of football in the country.

How a report to President Mahama led to Ampofo Ankrah’s suspension

“The government has its limitations when it comes to the private sector. You just saw the circular that I read to you earlier, where GFA is a non-governmental agency. Yes, the government owns the national team that it gives to the federation to manage for it. To the extent that we have not had an established criminal act by any person or group. The government cannot just move in and say that you are shutting down a private entity like that,” he said.

The Member of Parliament for Buem constituency also indicated that the government is keenly working to gain oversight responsibility over the association’s decisions by pushing for the FIFA Cooperation Agreement to be signed.

He noted that they are looking at ways to have a say in decisions regarding the national teams since they bankroll its activities to ensure the right decisions are taken.

“But several things have come up that interest us. We are pushing for proper structuring of things. We've asked that the FIFA cooperation agreement be signed. We think that the public interest committee, which was taken out, which used to exist in the statutes of the FA, but Post-normalization, they took it out, should be reintroduced.

“The government must be interested in how our national teams are run from the senior to the junior level, in the appointment of coaches, in the management, and so forth. We must have more say in the management committee. So we are looking for this raft of reforms that will help us so that even if tomorrow it is God that is sitting there, we will still be interested in coming around. So we don't think that we should just change the human being and leave the structure as it is,” he added.
