Ghanaian biological scientist Veronica Bekoe has etched her name into the country's public health history as the brain behind the "Veronica Bucket" a low-cost, effective handwashing setup that became an essential shield against diseases across Africa.

First conceptualized and created in the early 1990s, the invention was originally intended to address a critical need in medical laboratories.

At the time, Bekoe was working with the Public Health Reference Laboratory of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), where access to running water for frequent handwashing between laboratory procedures was often unreliable or non-existent.

Therefore to solve this problem, Bekoe adapted a standard plastic bucket by attaching a tap near its base and pairing it with a basin underneath to catch wastewater.

However this simple yet ingenious design provided a continuous stream of running water in areas without piped plumbing, drastically improving hygiene standards for lab technicians and health workers.

Meanwhile the Veronica Bucket served as a crucial tool in health facilities for decades, its true potential as a nationwide public health asset surged during major infectious disease outbreaks, most notably the COVID-19 pandemic.

However health experts worldwide emphasized hand hygiene as a primary line of defense against the coronavirus, the Veronica Bucket emerged as the most practical and accessible solution for households, schools, markets, and commercial transport terminals across Ghana and neighboring West African countries.

The affordability and ease of replication allowed local artisans, plastic manufacturers, and carpenters to adapt the design, introducing varied models equipped with foot pedals and soap dispensers.

Bekoe’s contribution to public health underscores the power of local innovation in addressing systemic challenges.

Her invention not only mitigated infection risks during critical healthcare crises but also fostered a lasting culture of hand hygiene across the sub-region.

Today, Veronica Bekoe stands recognized as a pioneer whose practical ingenuity continues to safeguard lives and inspire Ghanaian innovation.
