Human Rights Committee urges security agencies to expedite the Obuasi SHTS sexual abuse probe
Parliament’s Committee on Human Rights has called on security agencies to expedite investigations into alleged sexual abuse at Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), following reports that 19 female students have made allegations against the school’s headmaster.
The committee has also urged authorities to provide immediate psychological and emotional support to the affected students while ensuring their safety, privacy, and continued education.
In a statement issued on October 21, 2026, the committee’s chairman, Ernest Yaw Anim, Member of Parliament for Kumawu, expressed serious concern over the allegations and the need for swift action.
The committee acknowledged reports concerning the headmaster’s alleged arrest and the submission of a case docket to the Attorney-General for further consideration.
It called on the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and the Attorney-General to accelerate the investigative and prosecutorial processes, including inquiries into allegations involving other students.
According to the committee, any prosecution arising from the case must be conducted promptly and in accordance with the law, while upholding the principles of fairness and due process.
The committee has called on the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection to ensure that the students receive appropriate counselling and psychosocial support.
It stressed the need to protect the alleged victims from intimidation, stigmatisation, and possible retaliation, adding that their privacy, dignity, and educational welfare must be treated as priorities throughout the investigation.

The committee further appealed to the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to strengthen confidential and accessible channels through which students can report sexual abuse in schools.
It also called for a prompt and impartial investigation into any officials who may have received earlier complaints about the alleged misconduct but failed to take appropriate action.
The committee emphasised that safeguarding students from abuse is a fundamental human rights responsibility and assured the public that it would continue monitoring developments in the case.
The case attracted widespread public attention following an investigative documentary by Manasseh Azure Awuni, which highlighted allegations of sexual abuse involving the headmaster.
The number of students reported to have come forward subsequently increased from 16 to 19, intensifying calls for a comprehensive investigation and accountability.
Following the revelations, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu directed the suspension of the headmaster and called on the CID to investigate the allegations.
The Ghana Education Service also interdicted him pending the outcome of investigations.
Police have reportedly forwarded a case docket to the Attorney-General for advice concerning a complaint lodged by a student on August 4, 2026.
A police spokesperson indicated that additional allegations would be investigated if they were formally reported to the appropriate authorities.
Questions have also emerged over the reported arrest of the headmaster, with officials offering conflicting accounts.
On October 20, 2026, the Interior Minister told Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee that the headmaster had been arrested.
However, on October 21, the Bekwai Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Lloyd Baidoo, disputed reports of the arrest.
The conflicting statements have raised questions about the headmaster’s status as investigations continue.
The allegations have generated significant public concern and renewed calls for stronger safeguards against sexual abuse in educational institutions.
Parliament’s Committee on Human Rights has maintained that the matter requires urgent attention, with particular emphasis on protecting the affected students and ensuring accountability where wrongdoing is established.
