The Member of Parliament for Afigya Sekyere East, Mavis Nkansah Boadu, has broken her silence following a ban imposed on her by the Agonamanhene, Obirikomfo Anokye Boakye II, preventing her from organising any form of event within his traditional jurisdiction.

The MP, while addressing students who were preparing to participate in an inter-school sporting competition, explained that efforts were underway to resolve the disagreement that had led to the suspension of the games.

She assured the students that she was doing everything possible to ensure the competition took place, adding that they would be informed of a new date if the matter remained unresolved.

"I am sure you are looking forward to today's game, right? Unfortunately, there is a little problem that we are trying to resolve. So, for today, the games will not come on, and we are hoping that by tomorrow, the issue will be resolved. If not, we will communicate a new date to you.

"I know that you are not excited. You were very expectant and looking forward to this game. Unfortunately, the owners of the land say otherwise, that we cannot go ahead, and we respect the owners of the land, our paramount chiefs, and all of that. But definitely, it will come on," she said.

Despite the setback, the MP expressed optimism that the disagreement would be resolved to allow the students to participate in the much-anticipated sporting competition.

Background

The controversy follows a letter sent by the Member of Parliament for Afigya Sekyere East, Mavis Nkansah Boadu, inviting the Agonamanhene, Obirikomfo Anokye Boakye II, to the grand finale of an inter-senior high school football tournament.

The invitation reportedly angered the traditional ruler, who subsequently imposed a ban on the MP, preventing her from organising any social event within his traditional jurisdiction over what he considered an act of disrespect.

In a letter dated October 8, 2026, the MP invited the Agonamanhene, Obirikomfo Anokye Boakye II, to the grand finale of the MNB Inter-Senior High School Football Tournament, scheduled for Friday, October 23, 2026, at the Agona Community AstroTurf.

The tournament, according to the invitation, is a youth empowerment initiative intended to discover young football talents, promote healthy competition and foster unity among senior high schools in the Sekyere South Municipality.

However, the traditional ruler took exception to the manner in which the invitation was addressed to him, describing it as disrespectful and an insult to his authority as the Omanhene of the Agona Traditional Council.

In a response dated October 21, 2026, Obirikomfo Anokye Boakye II expressed surprise and displeasure at the MP's decision to address him as “The Chief, Agona Traditional Council” instead of recognising his traditional title and position.

According to the Agonamanhene, he had completed several traditional rites and ceremonies following his enstoolment, including swearing before the Agona Amantuo Nson on June 4, 2026, and before the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, on June 29, 2026.

He also stated that he had sat in state on July 2 and 3, 2026, offered his Aseda to the Asantehene on July 27, 2026, and celebrated his maiden and Big Akwasidae on July 19 and August 30, respectively.

The traditional ruler further noted that the Sekyere South Municipal Police Commander, the Municipal Director of Education and other dignitaries had attended some of these traditional programmes and paid homage to his authority.

He also claimed that the Municipal Chief Executive, Evans Twumasi, had attended the programmes either personally or through representatives.

Against this background, the Agonamanhene expressed disappointment that the MP had yet to show him what he considered the appropriate respect and reverence during her visits to Agona.

He described the invitation as a “huge surprise and an insult of the highest order,” questioning the thought process behind addressing him as the chief of the traditional council.

Following his objections, Obirikomfo Anokye Boakye II issued a directive banning the MP from organising any social event within his traditional jurisdiction, including the football tournament scheduled for October 23.

The ban covers Agona, Bipoa, Wiamoase, Bedomase, Afamanaso, Akrofonso and Amponyinamoa.

In the letter, the traditional ruler warned the MP against attempting to defy the directive and instructed the relevant municipal authorities to ensure that it was enforced until further notice.

“The following are my consequential orders,” he wrote before announcing the ban.

He further stated that he would not allow any misconduct to undermine his authority or that of Asanteman.
