President John Dramani Mahama has warmed hearts with a simple yet thoughtful gesture after receiving an honorary doctorate from the Patrice Lumumba Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia (RUDN University) in Moscow.

The honorary degree was conferred on the President on October 27, 2026, in recognition of his commitment to expanding access to education and strengthening Ghana-Russia cooperation in education and scientific research.

In a handwritten note following the conferment, Mahama described the recognition as a great honour and highlighted the longstanding friendship between Russia and Africa.

The President said the institution symbolises the enduring relationship between Russia and the African continent.

“It is a great honour to receive this conferment of an honourary degree from the great Patrice Lumumba University (RUON).

“This institution is the symbol of the endearing friendship between Russia and Africa.

“Long live Russia/Africa solidarity,” he wrote.

During the ceremony, the university also acknowledged Ghana’s efforts to promote equal educational opportunities, including the No Fee Stress policy, which has supported more than 152,000 first-year students at public universities, as well as free higher education for students with disabilities.

It further recognised Mahama’s academic ties to Russia, where he received his postgraduate education, and the longstanding educational partnerships between Ghana and RUDN University.

The conferment comes as the President participates in the third Russia-Africa Summit in Moscow, where he is expected to engage Russian officials on strengthening bilateral relations.
