Popular English pundit and ex-footballer Gabby Agbonlahor has said he would have voted for Kylian Mbappé to win the 2026 Ballon d’Or ahead of his countryman Harry Kane.
According to Agbonlahor, Kane’s victory was deserved, considering his performances during the season under review and his longevity in the game.
However, given the opportunity to vote, he would have opted for the French captain because of his blistering pace, ability to score from different angles and overall performances.
Kane ends England's 25-year Ballon d'Or wait
“Deservedly, he's got the award. But if I had to choose, I would choose Mbappé. My mate and I will choose Mbappé. Do you know why? I like quick players, and I love players like Mbappé. He reminds me of Ronaldo, Brazilian Ronaldo. I love players like Thierry Henry; he was one of my idols. Players can get the ball and get past the player. I've got Scottish in me,” he said on talkSPORT following Kane’s Ballon d’Or triumph.
Kane became the first English player to win the Ballon d’Or since Michael Owen in 2001 after being crowned the world’s best player at a ceremony in London.
The 33-year-old Bayern Munich striker is the fifth Englishman to win the award, following Stanley Matthews in 1956, Bobby Charlton in 1966, Kevin Keegan in 1978 and 1979, and Owen in 2001.
Kane scored 61 goals in 51 club appearances last season, reportedly setting a record for the most goals scored by a Bayern Munich player in a single campaign. Including his appearances for England, he registered 73 goals and eight assists in 65 matches.
