Ghanaian-born Arthur Wharton, widely recognised as the world’s first Black professional footballer, is being remembered 161 years after his birth for breaking racial barriers in English football and making his mark in athletics.

Wharton was born on October 28, 1865, in Jamestown, Accra, to a Grenadian-Scottish father and a Ghanaian mother.

He moved to England in 1883, where he pursued a sporting career that would make him a pioneer for Black athletes in a period when opportunities for them were limited.

Wharton made history in 1889 when he signed for Rotherham Town, establishing himself as one of the earliest Black players to compete professionally in English football.

His achievements extended beyond football. On July 3, 1886, he reportedly ran the 100-yard sprint in 10 seconds at Stamford Bridge in London, a performance that stood as a record for more than 30 years.

Wharton later played for Sheffield United, becoming the first Black player to feature in England’s First Division in 1895.

His career marked an important milestone in English football, where Black players faced significant racial barriers during the late 19th century.

Despite his sporting achievements, Wharton’s life after football was marked by financial difficulties. He died on December 12, 1930, aged 65.

His contribution to sport gained wider recognition decades after his death, with his story becoming an important part of efforts to acknowledge the role of Black pioneers in football.

In 1997, Wharton was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame, and in 2014, a statue honouring him was unveiled at the headquarters of the Football Association in England.

As Ghana marks the 161st anniversary of his birth, Wharton’s legacy remains a reminder of the country’s contribution to the history of international sport and the barriers overcome by early Black athletes.
