Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso and Willian Estevao
Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso has come under scrutiny over his handling of Brazilian prodigy Willian Estevao, who has been repeatedly left on the bench since joining the club.
The Blues suffered a penalty shootout defeat to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup after the match ended in a 1-1 draw in regulation time. Morgan Rodgers and Cody Gakpo both scored from the penalty spot during the game.
Ahead of the encounter, several Chelsea fans and club legends had called for Estevao to start, particularly given the cup competition and the absence of Cole Palmer, who was suspended following his red card in the previous game against Tottenham Hotspur.

However, Alonso opted to leave the Brazilian attacker on the bench for the entire match, introducing other young players when he made substitutions.
During the game, some Chelsea supporters chanted Estevao’s name in the hope of persuading the coach to bring him on, but Alonso remained firm in his decision.
After the match, Estevao went over to acknowledge the fans for their support and even gave his jersey to a supporter in what appeared to be an emotional moment.
The decision has sparked criticism among Chelsea fans and club legends who believe the young attacker deserves more playing time to aid his development.
Alonso has maintained that Estevao’s opportunity will come and that the Brazilian needs to remain patient.
However, the coach’s handling of the youngster is likely to remain a talking point as Chelsea prepare for their upcoming fixtures.
