American astronaut, Christina Koch, has recounted how a student exchange programme in Ghana in 1999 changed her perspective on life, culture and happiness.

Koch, who made history as the first woman to travel around the moon during NASA's Artemis II mission, said her experience in Ghana exposed her to a different way of looking at life and challenged assumptions she had formed growing up in the United States.

Speaking in a recent interview with African News and Euronews, she described her time in Ghana as being similar to her first spaceflight because it completely changed her perspective.

She said the experience taught her that happiness was closely linked to appreciating what one already had rather than constantly pursuing material possessions.

"And studying abroad in some ways was like my first space flight. It was where my perspective completely changed, and the culture was so different that I didn't even know I had made assumptions about how the world works based on my home country and my home culture.

"Something that I really took away was how we approach happiness. I realized that so many people in Ghana that I met were in many ways happier than the people I saw in the United States that maybe had more material things", she recalled.

Koch who has been awarded the Princess of Asturias Award for Concord in Spain, recognising her achievements in space exploration and her commitment to international cooperation said she returned to Ghana a few years ago to reconnect with people she had met during her exchange programme and revisit the country.

The astronaut also reflected on how travelling to space had changed her understanding of humanity and the need for people to treat one another with greater consideration.

She recalled that looking at Earth from the International Space Station and later from about a quarter of a million miles away during the Artemis mission made her appreciate how fragile the planet is.

Koch said the experience reinforced her belief that people should approach everyday interactions with greater understanding, listen to different perspectives and focus on what unites them.

"Every single interaction is an opportunity to make a choice for the world that you want to see," she added.
