Cucurella’s wife reveals how she escaped train crash that killed 68 people

Claudia Rodriguez, the wife of Real Madrid defender Marc Cucurella, has revealed how she narrowly avoided being caught up in a fatal train crash in Spain while travelling to Madrid on October 28, 2026.

The accident, which has sparked concerns about Spain’s transport system, reportedly claimed 68 lives, while several others sustained injuries and are receiving medical treatment.

According to Claudia, her train was travelling along the same route as the one involved in the crash but was some distance away from the accident scene.

She explained that her train had to turn around and return to Madrid to avoid being caught up in the incident. She also recounted the emotional moment when she realised how narrowly she had escaped the tragedy, reassuring her followers that she was safe.

“Guys, I’m fine. My train wasn’t affected at all since there was plenty of distance between us and the train that had the accident. We simply had to turn around and head back to Madrid since it was on the same route.

"It made my stomach turn thinking that if it had happened later, it would have happened to my train, but honestly, that’s nothing compared to what the people who actually were on that train must have gone through,” she wrote in a post on her Instagram page.

She also wished the families of the bereaved well, "On the way to Malaga on the train, sending support to the victims’ families and friends. All my strength once again to those families."

Following the tragedy, the Spanish Football Federation postponed 24 Copa del Rey matches as a mark of respect for the victims. Several La Liga matches were also postponed, while the government declared three days of national mourning.

Claudia and Cucurella began their relationship in 2018 and have three children together: Mateo, Rio and Bella.
