President John Dramani Mahama has held bilateral talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow as the two countries seek to strengthen cooperation across key sectors.

The meeting took place on October 30, 2026, on the sidelines of the Third Russia-Africa Summit.

Discussions focused on deepening Ghana-Russia relations, with particular attention to nuclear energy, defence, agriculture, education and other areas of mutual interest.

Following the meeting, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced that President Mahama had secured six key commitments from Russia to advance bilateral cooperation.

Among the major outcomes was Russia's commitment to work with Ghana towards establishing a 2,000-megawatt nuclear power plant to strengthen the country's energy security and support industrialisation.

Other commitments include a new defence pact to support the acquisition of strategic military assets for the Ghana Armed Forces, enhanced agricultural cooperation, increased scholarships for Ghanaian students and an agreement to end the participation of Ghanaians in the Russia-Ukraine war.

The two leaders also agreed to revive the Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation (PJCC), with Russia expected to host its next meeting in Moscow in the coming weeks.
