For many Ghanaians, travelling abroad in search of greener pastures represents a chance to build a better life, escape economic hardship and provide for themselves and their extended families back home.

The promise of a brighter future often makes foreign lands appear to be safe havens where dreams can be realised. However, for some, these destinations have turned into nightmares, shattering the very hopes that inspired their journeys.

Among the most heartbreaking cases are those involving Ghanaian children whose lives have been brutally cut short in gruesome murders, leaving families devastated and raising painful questions about the safety of their loved ones abroad.

The tragic incidents which would be highlighted in this article occurred in the United Kingdom and the United States, two of the most popular destinations for Ghanaians seeking opportunities abroad. Yet, for these young people, countries often associated with better prospects and the promise of a brighter future became the settings for heartbreaking tragedies that cut their lives short.

Here are five instances where Ghanaians abroad lost their children in gruesome incidents:

Javits Frimpong, 15 — Shot dead in New York (October 2026)

The latest gruesome murder of a Ghanaian child abroad is that of Javits Badu Nkansah Frimpong, a 15-year-old Ghanaian teenager, who was shot dead in the Bronx, New York, on Thursday, October 29, 2026, while on his way to school.

Javits Nkansah had moved from Ghana to the United States about a year earlier to reunite with his father, Thomas Frimpong, and pursue a better future.

According to reports, police officers responding to a shooting near Crotona Park at about 9:24 a.m. found the teenager with a gunshot wound to his abdomen. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

His father, who described him as a quiet and clever boy, said he had recently been informed by the school authorities that two students had been suspended for harassing his son. However, police had not established whether the reported bullying was connected to the fatal shooting.

Surveillance footage reportedly showed the teenager being chased before the shooting, while investigators searched for three teenage boys in connection with the incident.

Nathan Bawuah, 17 — Stabbed to death in East London (February 2024)

In 2024, 17-year-old Nathan Bawuah’s life was cut short in a fatal knife attack in London.

Nathan Bawuah was stabbed on Hackney Road in Shoreditch, East London, on Saturday, February 17, 2024, in an incident that left his family and loved ones devastated.

According to the Metropolitan Police, officers and paramedics were called to the scene near the junction with Cremer Street at approximately 10:50 p.m. Nathan was found with stab injuries, but despite efforts to save him, he died at the scene.

Nathan's family was informed of his death and received support from specialist police officers as investigations continued.

The death of seven-month-old Emanuela Sakyi in a road crash in Milton Keynes, England, in December 2022, was another devastating tragedy involving a Ghanaian family abroad. Unlike the other cases in this account, her death resulted from a fatal road collision rather than a deliberate murder.

Emanuela died from injuries sustained in a head-on collision involving a grey Peugeot 508 and a Fiat 500 on the H10 Bletcham Way, approaching Fenny Lock, at approximately 9:50 p.m. on December 4, 2022. She was travelling in the Peugeot and was taken to hospital after the crash, but doctors could not save her.

The incident also left a 30-year-old woman travelling with the baby with minor injuries, while the driver of the Fiat suffered a broken leg. The circumstances of the collision later became the subject of criminal proceedings involving her father, Emmanuel Sakyi, 29, and Ruth Oppong, 32.

In December 2024, Thames Valley Police confirmed that Sakyi had been charged with causing death by dangerous driving and causing death by careless driving while over the prescribed alcohol limit. Oppong was also charged with aiding and abetting causing death by dangerous driving, among other offences.

Police were called to Seven Sisters Road shortly after 3:00 a.m. following reports of a stabbing. Officers found Kwasi and another man, Brayane Tchenda, with stab wounds a short distance apart. Kwasi was later found in nearby Roth Walk, where he was pronounced dead.

Tchenda was taken to hospital for treatment before being discharged and arrested in connection with the incident. He was initially charged with possession of an offensive weapon, while detectives continued investigations into the fatal stabbing. A second man, aged 27, was also arrested in connection with the murder as police pursued further enquiries.

Ghanaian youngster shot dead in Harlesden, UK

James Owusu, a 22-year-old British-born man of Ghanaian parentage, was shot dead outside his family home in Harlesden, north-west London, on Wednesday, November 2, 2016.

The business student was killed in front of his mother in an attack that left his family struggling to understand why anyone would want to take his life.

Reports indicated that two men walked past the open front door of the family home before firing three shots at close range. James was hit in the back and fell just inside the doorway. His mother, Deborah, rushed to his aid and tried to stop the bleeding, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

In one of the most heartbreaking accounts of the incident, James reportedly told his mother, as he lay dying in her arms: "I haven’t done anything to anyone." His family said he had been watching a Champions League match at home with his uncle, who was visiting from Ghana, before briefly going next door to see his best friend.
