The Acting Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Professor Emmanuel Osei Sarpong, has assured the public that the Accra Sports Stadium is structurally strong enough to accommodate large crowds ahead of any upcoming event.

Speaking with Sporty FM, he addressed concerns about the facility's structural integrity after the former NSA Board Chairman previously described parts of the stadium as a death trap.

Touching on the facility's safety, Professor Osei Sarpong said engineering assessments of the stadium showed the structure is in satisfactory condition to host spectators.

He explained that the NSA had undertaken some reinforcement works in recent times, adding that the facility had successfully hosted two major events back-to-back.

“We have done some engineering assessments, and we have realised that the place is not too bad. Based on the assessments we have done, I believe the area will be safe for people who will be part of the programme,” he said.

Addressing concerns about the section underneath the scoreboard, which was previously cordoned off, the NSA boss indicated that the area had been assessed and was now considered safe for use.

Although the stadium has an official capacity of 40,000, Professor Osei Sarpong cautioned that arrangements were being made to prevent overcrowding and ensure spectators do not spill onto the pitch.

He added that organisers had been advised to use the VTA area as an additional viewing space, with giant screens provided if attendance exceeds expectations.
