Javits Frimpong was shot dead in the Bronx, New York City
The United States Embassy in Ghana has expressed condolences to the family of 15-year-old Javits Frimpong, a Ghanaian student who was shot dead in the Bronx, New York City.
In a statement, it said it was saddened by the teenager's death and extended its sympathies to his family, friends and others mourning him in Ghana and the United States.
“The US Embassy is deeply saddened by the tragic death in New York City of Javits Frimpong, a 15-year-old student of Ghanaian descent.
“We hold Javits' family, friends, and all who mourn him in Ghana and the United States in our thoughts,” the statement said.
Javits was reportedly shot on Thursday, October 29, 2026, while walking to school in the Bronx, New York.
The 15-year-old sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen near Crotona Park and was rushed to St Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
His death sparked an appeal for assistance to enable his mother, Doris Adu Gyamfi, who is in Ghana, to travel to the United States for his funeral.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani subsequently intervened, speaking with US President Donald Trump about the mother's difficulty securing a visa.
On Saturday, October 31, 2026, Mamdani announced that Trump had agreed to grant her an immediate visa.
“The murder of a child is a pain no parent should have to endure, let alone from thousands of miles away. Javits Frimpong’s mother deserves to say goodbye to her son in person,” Mamdani said.

“I just got off the phone with President Trump and he has agreed to grant her visa immediately,” he added.
The Ghanaian government has also pledged to cover the mother's travel expenses and support the organisation of a dignified funeral for the teenager.
Meanwhile, the suspects linked to the murder are yet to be arrested.
