The Member of Parliament for Effiduase-Asokore, Dr Nana Ayew Afriye, has appealed to supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) advocating for his nomination as Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s running mate for the 2028 general elections to allow the former Vice President the freedom to make his own choice.

He cautioned party supporters against mounting undue pressure on Dr Bawumia to settle on a particular candidate, insisting that the prerogative to select a suitable running mate rest solely with him.

Dr Ayew Afriye made the remarks when the question was put to him by the media on the sidelines of a massive demonstration organised by the NPP Youth Wing to demand accountability and the repayment of funds allegedly siphoned in connection with the South African evacuation exercise.

He said he was deeply humbled by the growing endorsements and recommendations from party supporters who consider him a suitable partner for Dr Bawumia ahead of the 2028 presidential election.

However, he maintained that such expressions of confidence should not translate into pressure on the party’s flagbearer.

“The choice of a running mate at this stage remains the sole prerogative of Dr Bawumia. Let us allow him that privilege to make that decision.

We do not have to put a gun to his head to choose a particular candidate. That would not be fair to him,” he stated.

Dr Ayew Afriye further expressed gratitude to individuals and groups who have publicly endorsed his potential candidacy, describing their recommendations as a reflection of their appreciation of his contributions and political work.

“If I’m lucky and chosen, I will gladly accept it and work hard to complement our collective efforts to win power in 2028.

“Notwithstanding that, I want to thank everyone who has found me worthy of that position and is recommending me. I deeply appreciate their confidence in me and their recognition of my work. However, I believe we should allow Dr Bawumia to make his own choice,” he indicated.

His comments come amid growing conversations within the NPP over the potential choice of a running mate for Dr Bawumia as the party positions itself for the 2028 general elections.

While several names have featured in discussions among party faithful, Dr Ayew Afriye insists that the ultimate decision must be left to the discretion of the flagbearer.
