Ghana’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations has called for justice for 24-year-old Ghanaian Joseph Owusu, whose death in New York is being investigated by police.

The Mission’s appeal follows the death of Owusu, which was announced to his mother, Mavis, on Saturday, October 31, 2026, by the New York City Police.

The incident is the second reported killing of a Ghanaian in New York within a week, following the death of 15-year-old Javits in the Bronx.

From Javits to Joseph: Two Ghanaian families face tragedy in New York

In a statement dated Wednesday, November 4, 2026, the Mission said a delegation, led by Deputy Permanent Representative Ben Dotsei Malor and Consul-General Anthony El-Adas, had visited Owusu’s family to convey the condolences of the Government of Ghana.

The visit was undertaken on behalf of Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who also called the bereaved family to express his sympathy and assure them of the government’s support.

“I have been shocked and saddened by this tragic news, especially coming on the heels of the horrible news of the killing of 15-year-old Javits, also in the Bronx, New York,” the minister said.

He added that the government would work with relevant United States authorities to ensure justice.

“He assured the bereaved family that the Government of Ghana stands firmly with them and will work with the relevant authorities and agencies of the United States Government to ensure that justice is served,” the statement said.

Owusu worked as a caregiver, supporting persons with disabilities, and also served as a chorister at his local Methodist church.

He is remembered by his family as a beloved son and brother. His death, according to the statement, has left his family and community devastated.

His brother, Kwadwo, has called for a thorough and transparent police investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death and for anyone found responsible to be brought to justice.

The Mission further disclosed that the police had informed the family that an autopsy was being conducted on Owusu’s body as investigations continued.
