Did you know that, as a Ghanaian, you can request an earlier US visa interview appointment if you are faced with urgent and unforeseen circumstances?

Yes, this is possible through the US Embassy's expedited nonimmigrant visa interview process, which allows eligible applicants to request an earlier appointment in cases of urgent and unforeseen circumstances.

These may include emergencies such as funerals, medical situations, or school start dates that require applicants to travel earlier than their originally scheduled interview date.

However, applicants must meet certain requirements before the US Embassy will consider their requests.

The Embassy has outlined the steps applicants in Ghana must follow to apply for an expedited interview appointment.

1. Complete the normal visa application process

Before requesting an emergency appointment, applicants must first complete the regular nonimmigrant visa application process.

This requires them to:

- Complete and submit the online DS-160 visa application form.

- Pay the required visa application fee.

- Schedule the earliest available regular interview appointment through the official US visa appointment website, usvisaappt.com.

Applicants cannot request an expedited interview without first securing a regular appointment.

2. Submit an emergency appointment request

After booking a regular interview, applicants can log into their accounts on usvisaappt.com to submit an expedited appointment request.

They must follow these steps:

- Select "My Dashboard".

- Go to "My Appointment Requests" and locate the scheduled interview.

- Click on "View Details".

- Select "Create Emergency Request".

- Complete the Emergency Request Form.

The form requires applicants to provide the reason for the emergency, their intended travel date, a description of the situation, and supporting documents.

Applicants must provide evidence to show why they need an earlier interview date.

3. Schedule the expedited interview

After submitting the request, applicants must wait for the US Embassy to review it. The decision will be communicated through an email notification.

If the request is approved, applicants will receive instructions to schedule an expedited interview appointment.

If it is rejected, they will also receive an email notification but will be allowed to keep their original interview date.

Applicants whose requests are approved must return to usvisaappt.com to select an earlier interview date.

They must:

- Log into their account.

- Select "My Dashboard".

- Go to "My Appointments".

- Locate their scheduled appointment and click "Reschedule".

- Choose an available date and time for the expedited interview using the online calendar.

Approval of an emergency request does not automatically reschedule the interview. Applicants must complete this step themselves.

4. Attend the visa interview

Applicants must appear at the US Embassy on the approved date and time with all the required documents.

They are also advised to review the Embassy's security regulations and list of prohibited items before attending the interview.

5. Retrieve your passport and other documents

After the interview, applicants will be notified when their passports and other documents are ready for collection.

They will also receive instructions on how to register for passport and document pickup.

The Embassy has clarified that applicants cannot collect their passports or other documents personally at its premises.

Applicants can also track the progress of their visa applications through the US Department of State's Consular Electronic Application Centre.

MP rejects Mahama’s invitation over World Cup visa probe

- An expedited interview is not automatically granted to every applicant who requests one.

- Applicants must first complete the DS-160 form, pay the visa fee and book a regular interview.

- A valid reason and supporting documents are required to justify the emergency request.

- Applicants whose requests are denied retain their original interview appointments.

- Approval of an expedited interview request does not guarantee visa approval. The visa application will still be assessed during the interview.
