Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has explained why he intends to remain politically independent, saying accepting an appointment from the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) would undermine his credibility as a public-interest advocate.

He said although he has supported the NDC in certain matters, that does not make him a member of the party.

"For consistency, I have to decline everything and keep the fight. So I spoke for NDC to come but it doesn't mean I'm NDC. There's no way I can NDC."

he said in a view sighted by GhanaWeb on November 7, 2026.

Kpebu, who was called to the Bar on October 5, 2007, stressed that he had survived in the profession without joining a political party.

He said 19 years in legal practice has taught him that speaking the truth and maintaining professional independence are more important than political connections.

“This is my 19th year. I haven't lacked. I didn't have to go and join any political party,” he said.

Kpebu argued that Ghana needs people who can remain politically neutral and hold governments accountable regardless of which party is in power.

“We can't have a nation where all of us are politically aligned. Some people must stand in the middle,” he added.
