Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Alexander Kwaku Obeng has urged vehicle owners to ensure ownership is properly transferred and registered in the name of anyone they hand over a vehicle to.
Speaking on Asempa FM, ACP Obeng cautioned that failure to complete the registration process could expose the original registered owner to liability if the vehicle is used in an illegal activity or involved in an offence.
He explained that when a vehicle remains registered in the name of its previous owner, that person could be held responsible rather than the individual who possesses or drives it.
“Every vehicle owner should ensure that a vehicle being handed over to another person is properly registered in that person’s name. Otherwise, if the vehicle is involved in any illegal activity or the person driving it is caught committing an offence, you, as the registered owner, may be held responsible rather than the person to whom you gave the vehicle,” he said.
ACP Obeng’s advice highlights the importance of completing the necessary ownership transfer procedures whenever a vehicle is sold, given away or handed over to another person.
He urged vehicle owners not to rely solely on handing over the vehicle and its documents but to ensure that the official registration records reflect the new ownership.
