The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has introduced the Governor's Economic and Financial Story of the Year Award to encourage quality journalism and improve public understanding of economic and financial issues.

The award, established by the central bank, is expected to recognise journalists whose work helps explain economic developments, promotes financial literacy and contributes to national policy discussions.

Speaking at the 30th Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Media Awards at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel on Saturday, November 7, 2026, Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Asiama, said the media played an important role in helping citizens understand complex economic issues.

“Monetary policy decisions, inflation trends, financial sector reforms, exchange rate movements, and digital financial innovations are often complex subjects. It is through accurate, balanced, and insightful reporting that these issues are translated into information citizens can understand and use,” he said.

Dr Asiama explained that the award was part of efforts to strengthen economic and financial reporting in Ghana, adding that professional journalism was essential in helping the public distinguish facts from misinformation and speculation.

He disclosed that the award package would include sponsorship for the recipient to attend either the International Monetary Fund and World Bank Spring Meetings or Annual Meetings.

The package will further provide opportunities for professional fellowships with institutions such as the Thomson Foundation and Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, as well as accredited local journalism training centres.

Scholarship opportunities and professional exchange programmes with media organisations such as Bloomberg and Reuters will also be available.

“Our objective is simple: to invest in the development of journalists who can continue to elevate the quality of economic and financial reporting in Ghana,” the Governor said.

He also called on journalists to uphold media freedom, professionalism and responsible digital engagement, particularly as misinformation, disinformation, online abuse and hate speech continue to pose challenges in the digital space.

He congratulated the GJA on its 30th awards ceremony and commended journalists for their contribution to democracy and national development.
