Former Education Minister and Bosomtwe Lawmaker Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum has cautioned Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George against what he considers an increasingly arrogant and confrontational approach to governance, urging him to remain humble and exercise restraint in the discharge of his duties.

Dr Adutwum criticised Sam George’s recent public comments and conduct during an appearance on Kessben TV, describing some of his statements as “wild” and suggesting that the minister was becoming too pompous.

He argued that the Communications Minister was stepping on too many toes with his approach, warning that his attitude could eventually undermine his effectiveness in office and create unnecessary tension with people whose support he needs to succeed.

Dr Adutwum specifically reminded Sam George that political authority and ministerial positions were temporary, stressing that the power he currently enjoys would not last forever.

“Power is transient. You cannot behave as though you will be in that position forever. You have to understand that the position you occupy today is not permanent, so you must be humble in the way you exercise your authority,” he cautioned.

The former Education Minister’s comments come amid public discussions surrounding Sam George’s statements about his regulatory powers as Communications Minister.

The Ningo-Prampram MP has attracted attention over his position on the regulation of broadcasting platforms, including his remarks suggesting that he could shut down politically and religiously affiliated radio stations that fail to comply with the relevant regulations.

His comments have generated debate about the extent of ministerial authority and the appropriate relationship between government officials and media organisations.

Dr Adutwum warned that adopting a high-handed approach could alienate important stakeholders and even turn potential allies against the minister.

He urged Sam George to recognise that leadership requires more than the possession of authority, adding that humility and calmness were necessary qualities for anyone occupying a public office.

The former minister’s remarks come a few days after Sam George had heated exchanges with a soldier in his Ningo-Prampram constituency.
