A middle aged man who claimed he was a teacher and offered to tutor the children of Mr. Adewusi Olagidey, a resident of Achimota St. John in Accra, is in the custody of the police under suspicion of armed robbery.

The suspected teacher/robber, Godfred Tetteh Laryea (a.k.a. King Yellow) is assisting the police in their investigation to track down four other heavily armed robbers.

The Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Owusu Donkor of the Anti-Robbery Unit, disclosed this to The Accra Daily Mail at his office in Accra last week.

ASP Donkor said last year, Mrs. Koshie Adewusi, the wife of the victim, asked Amehe Enyonam, a friend of hers, to get her a study teacher to assist her children at home. Laryea was introduced to Madam Adewusi for appointment last December.

Mr. Donkor said on January 23, the suspect decided to watch a film with the children's parents after taking the children through the evening classes. At about 8:30pm Mr. Laryea asked to leave, and took with him a small bag he kept his books in.

Unexpectedly, at about 10pm the suspect came back and knocked at the gate of his employer. When the security man asked the purpose of his mission, he claimed he had forgotten his bag and had returned for it. As soon as the security man opened the gate, four heavily armed robbers with pistols trooped in and marched the security man into his employer's sitting room and commanded the household to fall flat at gunpoint.

ASP Owusu said the robbers took four mobile phones, a Panasonic video deck, $2000, 5 million cedis and jewellery worth millions of cedis, before bolting away leaving the suspected teacher and the victims prostrate.

He said after the robbers had left, the suspected teacher began to insist that he was not part of the gang, but Mr. Adewusi immediately raised the alarm and the suspect was escorted to the Mile 7 Police Station where he was arrested.

ASP Owusu said according to the complainant, the suspected teacher took his bag when first leaving the house, even though he had nothing to take with him. The complainant described it as a ploy to rob him.

ASP Owusu said the suspect, 'King Yellow', is in police custody pending investigation and will soon be arraigned before court.
