The great adidas kit scandal

Tue, 12 Feb 2002 Source: Network herald

After the storm, there is calm. But many questions remain unanswered. Where is the Adidas deal and who signed on behalf of the Ghana Football Association? Nobody seems to know, and after calling up Adidas Germany’s Lara Thiemann in Munich, it appears our worst fears have been justified.

According to her, Salomon global which she heads, handles public relations for Adidas international but there were no records in their file of any deal with the Ghana Football Association. There could be a perfectly reasonable explanation for this. The coordinator of the Black Stars management committee, Mr. Kojo Quashie has stated that under the terms of agreement, a memorandum of understanding was reached between the GFA and Adidas. The agreement being that the GFA has an opt out clause which effectively means that after CAN 2002 there will be no deal.

But was there ever a deal in the first instance?

Our investigations also came up with the name Jagal Sport Ltd.; a Nigerian Sports outfit affiliated to Adidas but again our lead fell on rocks. The reluctance of the GFA to be transparent on the issue has not helped matters at all. In fact Ghanaian journalists have been told to mind their own business because no explanation or apology will be forthcoming. Not even the constant invitations to Mr. Marcus the Local representation of Snappy Sports to come clean on the precise details of the deal have yielded fruits. So where do we stand now?

Thankfully the honourable Minister for Youth and Sports Edward Osei-Kwaku has indicated that “a lot of things will changed” it is the prayer of every Ghanaian that A LOT of things will really change and that this is not just another “positive talk” we need positive change. By the way I hope Uncle Ben Koufie and his able lieutenants all watched the GREAT FINAL between Cameroon and Senegal. Did you see the jerseys of the two teams? I rest my case.
