Broadcast Journalist and Television Newscaster, Gideon Aryeequaye, has openly admitted that he has always been an active member of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Gideon Aryeequaye, who was recently adjudged the Best Television Newscaster for the Year 2010 at the maiden Radio and Television Personality Awards (RTPA), has reportedly filed his nomination, to contest on the ticket of the NDC as Parliamentary candidate for the Weija Constituency.
The handsome TV News anchor of ETV-Ghana was joined by a very large group of supporters from the Weija constituency. Eight other people are expected to compete with him for the seat.
Exceptionally good looking with a spotless face and a well-trimmed moustache, Gideon, will square off with another beauty, the NPP’s Shirley Ayorkor Botwe, who is the MP for the area, if he is given the nod by NDC delegates in Weija.
The Head of News at ETV-Ghana who was speaking in an interview with Suhini Alhassan on Radio Gold prior to the filing of his nomination, disclosed that he has always been a politician; but due to his objectivity and neutrality as host of his morning shows, it was difficult to tell.
“It’s difficult to tell where my lineage goes…I have decided to take up this position because a lot of people wanted me to…I look like a very credible candidate I must confess…I have been a member of the NDC since 1992 and even before 1992. I call myself a Cadre because back in the days of hunger, we were sharing Banku and Yellow Corn Kenkey at the Community Centre. Of course, Gideon has been there from the scratch…I think I am the one that can unseat (the incumbent, Hon Ayorkor Botwe)…,” he said.
According to him, for some 6 years now, he has been pressed to contest the seat by well-wishers and party activists in the constituency, but decided to offer other candidates a go.
“NDC has always been my party…Chairman Rawlings is a friend of mine…my heart has been with the NDC since those days…,” he said.
In a special message to his constituents, the affable broadcast journalist said though he cannot address all the numerous problems facing them, he will act as a liaison; soliciting for funds from several quarters to help develop the constituency.
“I will be listening to them for them to tell me the problem they have and see to it that as much as possible, I address them…” he added.
Until his dramatic move to ETV-Ghana, Gideon Argyeequaye was a newscaster with Kanda-based TV3. He also worked at HappyFm, as host of World@Five, a current affairs program.
Aside that, Gideon writes scripts for movies, jingles and produces TV commercials. He attended the Koforidua Secondary Technical, from where he proceeded to the University of Ghana, Legon where he read chemistry and later, had short refresher courses in Media Broadcast at the University of East London.
