Government says funds for the acquisition of vehicles from Nigeria for Ghana Police Service were sourced from the provisional estimates approved by Parliament last December. The provisional estimate was approved for the administration of the country until government’s budget for this year receives approval.
The NDC Minority and Convention People’s Party have raised concerns about the source of funding for the vehicles, the nature of the agreement and why approval was not sought from Parliament. The statement from Information Minister, Jake Obetsebi Lamptey said the Nigerian government supplied the vehicles, which cost about 13 million dollars, without demanding any down payment.
The Nigerian government has also offered to spread payment for the 50 cars already supplied over a three-year period with zero interest. The second consignment of fifty cars will however attract an interest of 2.5 per cent.
Mr. Obetsebi Lamptey who had earlier taken a swipe with the minority Chief Whip, Doe Adjaho for raising the issue in the media and on JOY FM, described as odd reasoning, any attempt to compare circumstances surrounding the acquisition of the vehicles to that of the Gulf Stream presidential jet by the previous government.
