… Made able Seamen

The Western Naval Command of the Ghana Navy has conferred on all finalists of this year’s Miss Ghana beauty pageant, the special rank of “Able Seamen Class Two”.

At a special sending-off ceremony held in their honour, officials of the institution conferred the rank on them in recognition of their resilience and absolute sense of purpose during their one-day working exercise and tour of the facility.

Welcoming the finalists to the facility, the Western Naval Commander, Commodore T.S Appiah expressed his outfit’s delight at partnering with the Miss Ghana office, adding that the decision to get the pageant closer to the activities of the Ghana Navy was laudable.

During their one-day visit, the contestants were taken on a tour of the Base, embarked upon a sea trip and were also briefed extensively on why the Ghana Navy exists, and its history. The presentation also highlighted on the general overview of Ghana’s maritime boundaries as well as the roles and responsibilities of the Ghana Navy.

Established by an act of parliament in 1959, the formation of the Ghana Navy dates back to the period of the Second World War,” officials said. A special Navy Voluntary Force provided the first batch of ratings to form the nucleus of the present Navy.

The relationship between the Miss Ghana event and the Ghana Navy is significant in many aspects and dates back to years.

Eight years ago, Inna Maryam Patty, CEO of Exclusive Events Ghana, then vying for the coveted Miss Ghana 2004 title, benefited from a special training that eventually aided her on her way to being crowned winner.

Ms. Patty performed a special Navy drill during the Talent segment, wowing the over 2000 audience at the National Theatre to power her way to victory.

It will also be recalled that during the 2010 finals of the Miss Ghana beauty pageant, the finalists performed a special Navy choreographed march-past as their opening stage act in a spectacular manner that set the tone for a lively night.

The tour of the Western Command Base by the finalists follows a successful 4-day military Boot Camp at the Jungle Warfare School of the Ghana Armed Forces.
