Legal Practitioner and staunch member of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abraham Amaliba, has revealed that security officials at Heathrow Airport relied on information from the Narcotic Control Board (NACOB) to bust the significant quantity of cannabis.
UK authorities last Monday track-down cannabis haul in a plane from Ghana at the Heathrow Airport with a street value estimated at 4. 3 million pounds.
It is the biggest bust in three years, UK officials revealed in a statement.
Speaking on an Accra based radio station on Saturday, Lawyer Amaliba dismissed accusations of negligence by NACOB officials at the Kotoka International Airport and divulged that it [NACOB] played a major role in the seizure.
“Inside sources have hinted some of us that it was NACOB that alerted Heathrow authorities for the arrest to be made so let us stop the accusations”, he said.
He said in spite of the recent development, the NDC government since assuming office in 2008 has shown enough commitment to fighting against the drug menace as compared to the erstwhile NPP administration, where drug dealers operate with impunity.
“This is not an indictment on how government is handling the drug menace but it is also not too good for us as a nation”, Lawyer Amaliba added.
As a result of the seizure, five officials have been arrested by the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) to assist in investigations.
Parliament has moved to seek answers as to how such a huge quantity of cannabis left Ghana without being noticed.
The House is expected to invite the Interior Minister, William Kwasi Boafo, to come and answer questions related to the arrest, which brings the nation to the spotlight as a major narcotic hub.
