A Magistrate court three at Ashanti New Town (Ashtown) in Kumasi, on Friday remanded Mr. Awal Aziz Mohammed, Kwabre East Constituency Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), in police custody on a provisional charge of murder.

The NDC top shot's incarceration is in connection with the death of one Kwadwo Owusu Ansah, a lotto receiver.

The deceased is reported to have been assaulted by Chairman Aziz Mohammed on September 20, 2012 without provocation at Ahwiaa in the Kwabre East District of the Ashanti Region, resulting in his death three days later, on Sunday September 23, 2012.

An uncle of the deceased, Mr. Mathew Atta Acheampong, a Sanitation Guide of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) at Mamponteng, told The Chronicle that on that fateful day in question, Aziz Mohammed was said to be stuck in traffic at Ahwiaa.

He said while in the traffic, one Nuru Mafia banged the car of the NDC Chairman, who took offence and consequently got down to ascertain the damage.

The Chronicle heard further that suspecting the deceased to be the culprit, Aziz headed towards Owusu Ansah, pounced on him, and gave him a severe beating speeding away in his car, after the deceased had been rescued by onlookers.

Mr. Acheampong said his nephew complained of chest pains on Saturday September 22, 2012, and decided to seek medical treatment, but died the following day.

A formal complaint was lodged with the Mamponteng police, who arrested Aziz Mohammed last Wednesday, and after initial investigations, charged him with the offence, which remanded him in police custody.

The suspect will re-appear before the court on October 8, 2012, to defend the charge.
