The Ghana National Fire Service may soon face financial difficulties if the trend of fire outbreaks in the country continues.

According to the Service, it has spent almost 10 million Ghana cedis in the first quarter of this year in fighting fire across the country.

Chairman of the governing council of the Fire Service, Alhaji Amadu Sorogo, says between January and April this year alone, the country recorded over 1,300 fire outbreaks resulting in the death of 173 people.

He told Joy News’ parliamentary correspondent Elton John Brobbey, though the service will not disclose details of investigations conducted into recent fires, he suspects inferior cables and arson are responsible for recent outbreaks at the country’s markets.

He also complained about the lack of cooperation from the public when personnel are fighting fire. Fire fighters are also faced with the challenge of access to fire sources due to poor planning, he pointed out.

Alhaji Amadu Sorogo said, many fire hydrants within communities are dry; while unapproved structures have also been mounted on some of the hydrants.

In Parliament, some members contributing on the fire outbreaks in the country raised doubts about the effectiveness of the security agencies in unraveling the mysteries surrounding the fires.
