Former President Jerry John Rawlings has confirmed that the assassination plot against him was real and not a figment of his imagination or mere fabrications.

This was contained in a statement issued by his special assistant, Mr Victor Smith in Accra on Friday in reaction to the NPP government assertion that the alleged assassination plot was mere cries of “wolf”

The statement revealed that latest intelligence reports from a source in Canada with close links to security operatives in Togo confirmed earlier reports from Ghana and abroad about the intended assassination. It pointed out that none of these reports were fabricated and that if the clamed agencies in Ghana claim that they were not aware then the least they could do was to investigate independently in order to avoi8d an unfortunate national calamity.

Mr Smith accused the government of having the tendency to give a lethal spin to everything Rawlings says and that was the possibility of framing him up on charges of instigating a coup. He made reference to the similar circumstances in cote d’Ivoire where former head of State General Robert Guei and his family were gunned down in the ongoing crises on allegations of instigating a coup’.

He also expressed his concern about the current change in the security arrangements of the ex-President’s residence where plain clothed personnel identified as military men have replaced the police personnel and stated that “this also curiously confirm reports we had received from very highly placed intelligence sources”.
