Ghana Embassies or high Commissions abroad are places I like to avoid like plague. My experiences with them have been horrible, whether in the USA, UK, Caribbeans, or Canada. Anytime, I have to deal with them, it brings childhood memory when I was held down and by Mom and Dad to get my first vaccination. Seriously, that is how I feel going to these places. This is the reason why I always go for the multiple visa so that I can avoid them for years.
Well, inasmuch as we love to criticize those Ghanaian Missions abroad for their lackadaisical, unfriendly and nncourteous attitude at the offices, I must step in at this time and give credit to those who served me at the Toronto High Commissioner a few moons ago. I know bad memories are unforgettable, but let me not forget one good deed from these people.
The lady was very pleasant and the guy was helpful. I could not believe my eyes. I spent less than 5 mins there and they asked me to come back before 3pm to get the passport back, because I paid for express. I took my time to visit the beautiful North York Center and walked into the Library. As soon as I walked back to the room, they took the receipt and handed the passport back to me. I could not believe that; I almost left the room without checking whether they gave me a visa or not, but the guy called me back and asked me to open the passport and see if everything was OK. I opened and checked it and thanked them and left.
On my way home, I thought to myself I should have asked their names and write a personal thank you to them or write an article about my experience with them since they have been stuck up with bad rap for long time. So those of you who serve me at Toronto High Commission, keep up with your good work and make sure you rep Ghana positively. Thank you.

I equally have to extend my gratitude to one Ackon at the NY consulate who called to apologize to me over the unruly, crude and discourteous behavior meted out to me by that woman in NY. Mr. Ackon saw my article in July (didn't use my full name, though my first initial and last name appeared as e-mail at the top)on Ghanaweb and therefore had to DC for my letter to the ambassador to be forwarded to him. He instantly called to apologize and informed me of the measures being taken to address the issue, even though it doesn't seem likely I'll get my money back. At any rate, I'm glad he called and I'll find sometime to write a complimentary article as a form of appreciation to him.

If they are SAINTS, with no imaginable or identifiable shortcomings, then how come some come here every now and then to insult the departed ones like Busia, Nkrumah, Victor Owusu, Akwasi Amankwaa Afrifa, Kotoka, Atta Mills, etc, only for the same people to be attacking those who are legitimately interrogating Awoonors tribalistic, divisive behavior during his life time as unacceptable, abominable, inappropriate scandalous etc;?
How many times had ZEO not come on these pages to gloat over the killing of the three (3) high court judges, and the retired major and the cold-blooded murder of Kutu Acheampong, Afrifa, Yaw Boakye, Kotei Akuffo, Felli, etc,? I guess these individuals rounded up tied to poles and shot like dogs deserve such death because they were no human beings like Kofi Awoonor and thus could be denigrated even long after their departure from this earth.
We will not be taken serious as people unless we start to allow objectivity and fairness play a significant role in our national discourse.

Take us back to how Arthur and Yeboah were tied to stakes and shot like dogs by Afrifa & CO; and don't forget to mention Victor's insults and description of Ewes in very unsavory terms. As a Bono from Techiman, I know many attempts embarked upon by Busia to ensure the annihilation of Techiman, to the extent that he mischievously attempted to remove the then Techiman District Council and place it under Kintampo as a punishment for not voting for him. This tells you that it's not all Akans who don't have one or two grudges against some of our so-called leaders.
Do we have someone called Kennedy Agyapong advocating for the elimination of Ewes and Gas? Do I need to blindly follow sheepish people like Kennedy Agyapong, Victor Owusu & Co in their hate for other tribes simply because they were/are from my tribe? With the picture painted above, are you insisting that we Akans are saints? We surely need to be objective when we're pointing accusing fingers.

I had to send my uncle's body to Ghana last year for burial. But I needed a Ghana visa, so I applied for one in the Ghana consulate in DC. I had not received it three days prior to my departure and I figured it out that it may not get to me if it was mailed by the consulate. I therefore called to tell them not to mail it and that I would pick it up myself. Guess what? Not a single person answered any of the phone numbers (about 10 of them) that I called. I decided to drive to DC to ascertain why the delay; got there at about 9:15 am. The guy at the gate told me it was ready but his "boss" wanted to see me, with the reason being that he wanted to know why I called all the phone numbers at the consulate.
It's so pathetic these Ghanaians who got their positions at the embassies and consulates through "whom you know", think they're the blessed few and that the rest of us must bow to them. The embassies and the consulates need complete overhaul for these ignorant dummies to change their mean spirited and rude attitude toward fellow Ghanaians and for work that they're paid to do.

Since when do civil servants stop witholding to heir names?they all act as if the government sent them out to go and lord it over Ghanaians over there. You go to the embassy which is part of Ghana in diplomatic world and your fellow citizens treat you as if they are better than you because either they work are the ministry of foreign affairs or being posted to temporarily serve the Ghanaian abroad.
As a black American when i travel to Ghana and visit my embassy the staff are more than willing to treat me with respect but that is not what happens in the Ghanaian missions.they are here and we pay all their bills for them, rent houses for them, provide them transportation, their phone bills and electric bills whilst they still get paid in Ghana. Mj it is easy to condemn when you have no idea of how these missions are resourced. Most of these missions have equipments that are as old as yourself. There is a culture of no maintenance because funds collected are paid to government without the necessary provision for new equipment or maintenance.
The very people you are fighting for, apply for multiple passports foolishly providing similar information. The missions have a right to ensure that passports are issued to the right and genuine applicants in order to keep the credibility of the missions intact.
I do not condone unprofessional atitude of staff of some of these missions but you nailed the issue on the head by describing the quality of staff recruited. When politicians ensure that their unintelligent and uneducated family members are recruited at these missions point fingers in the right direction.
You talk about improvements at the London Mission due to automation. Perhaps you should investigate the cost involved and the quality of service provided. Try applying for a visa and then tell me how long it took you to complete an application. Go to the missions site and find out how much visas cost not to mention the cost of substandard passport photographs being turned out.I am told that a passport cost over £200 in London. Why?
For your information it is not all the missions that have the equipment to print these passports because dinosaurs in Accra decide who should have the equipment and who should not.

Jojo Marfo, your defensive posture tells me that you're one of the irresponsible and foolishly rude individuals working in one of the consulates but writing with a different moniker. Does the lack of equipment make those consulate/embassy staff to be rude to clients? Why don't they be principled and resign their positions if they feel that their employers are frustrating them by not providing them with the needed equipment to work with? Why take your frustration to innocent clients? They are not indispensable, are they? Do you know how their lack of human feeling and lack of empathy frustrate others who throng the consulates/embassies for one service or the other? Don't be silly here, please.

No one will dispute that fact. they are money grabbers for their political parties and not serving the interest of the country. Let's take the case of Passport Renewal. My wife has just had hers renewed and she had 4 years up to 2017.She paid £110.00. If Prof wants to find a way of funding NDC, he should come clean to tell All Ghanaian British that he needs money for his party and therefore would give a 4 Year Duration for ALL our Passports instead of hiding behind the curtain and giving us that stupid excuse of Biometric. To make a long story short, I just want to know why we are paying £110 for a Passport with 4 years Expiring Date instead of the 10years we normally get?

My friend left the place weeping. He was heaped with insults and told in the face that he had actually sold his passport to some other national. "You Ghanaians like that!" He was told.
And this was just a few weeks to his appointment with the US Embassy where he would go for further studies.
After chasing up and giving up. He had to get an emergency exit document from the Malaysian authorities to return to Ghana where he easily got a passport.
This is how we treat ourselves abroad
