The Pan African Writer’s Association (PAWA) has presented Awards to deserving personalities and organisations for their contributions towards the development of writing in Ghana.
The presentations were made on the occasion of the 10th International Writers Day. The Award Winners include a former Chief Executive of the Volta River Authority, Mr. Kalitsi and former Ambassador to Russia, Mr. S. C. Quao.
Organisations which received the awards were Ress and Co, Unomax, Macmillan, GIHOC Distilleries, Ghacom Limited, Ghana Breweries, La Palm Royal Beach Hotel and the Ghana Trade Fair Authority.
The significance of the International African Writers’ Day is to bring writers together in order to deliberate on issues and work together towards the common goal of developing and advancing the cause of writing.
The occasion also provides the conditions and atmosphere for stock taking and appraisal of their activities.
In 1989, precisely November 7, to November 11, the First International African Writers’ Day was marked in all African Countries.
In Ghana, the consistent Congress of the Pan African Writers’ Association (PAWA) was held at the Kwame Nkrumah Conference Centre under the theme: “African Unity – a liberation of mind” and attended by representatives of more than 36 countries who formally signed the declaration to establish PAWA attained full diplomatic status in Ghana in 1992.
